Moving from city to city, Adele has a life that would be considered less than ideal by celebrity standards but her unwavering ambition is what outshines her past.
2. Family crisis at a tender age

Adele’s mother and father never marry.
This makes her family life quite rocky.
Even though her father tries to stay in touch with his daughter until her teenage years, news has it that Adele never forgives him for walking out on her.
Wonder Years
4. Discovering her singing voice
Because her interest lies in singing, Adele is very observant of people’s voices in general from the very beginning.
She sees Pink perform at the Brixton Academy and Pink’s voice influences her the most in those years, she says, shaping the way Adele looks at music and its charm on people.
Her daily ritual of listening to Etta James every night leads her to discover her own voice.
5. Early inspirations for Adele
Some of the earliest inspirations in the music industry for Adele are the ones that spark her interest and turn it into a passion.
The Spice Girls, according to her, play a great role in making Adele confident that singing is something her life can revolve around.
She says, “They made me who I am.”
6. Records from the ’40s cement her choice of music
Known for her soulful pop music, Adele finds inspiration comes in many forms.
Some other names that inspire this young talent are Aaliyah, Ella Fitzgerald, Destiny’s Child and Mary J. Blige. Adele writes her first song, “Hometown Glory,” at the age of 16.
7. For Adele, discovering music is like coming across a treasure chest
Even though she listens to music quite often, it is not until she comes across old records in a nearby store that she really understands the effect good music can have on an artist’s understanding of music.
In an interview with the Telegraph, she says, “Chart music was all I ever knew.
So when I listened to the Ettas and the Ellas, it sounds so cheesy, but it was like an awakening.
I was like, oh, right, some people have proper longevity and are legends.
I was so inspired that as a 15-year-old I was listening to music that had been made in the ’40s.”
8. Her mother’s advice comes in handy!
Adele says that during her youth, her mother always tells her “to explore, and not to stick with one thing.”
Because she is growing up really close to her mom, she takes this advice to heart!
Adele’s early gravitation towards singers and artists in various genres and tones is a culmination of the character that her dear mother instills in her, which is soon to make this music fanatic a rising star.
The Beginning of Her Career
9. Adele’s first performance ever
Being closely affiliated with music from an early age, Adele gives her first performance in her school days.

Her classmates include popular figures such as Leona Lewis and Jessie J.

Shingai Shoniwa, vocalist of the Noisettes, happens to be Adele’s neighbor while she is enrolled at the BRIT Academy.
According to Adele, many times she would visit Shingai and sing with her.
The future vocalist impresses Adele so much that she decides to be a songstress instead of just singing others’ lyrics.
13. Adele’s interest in A&R
In 2006, when she graduates from this school, Adele is planning to work as a talent hunter and overseer for a record label.
She feels her passion for music lies in recognizing the same light in others.
However, little does she know that her successful career as a fresh singer lies just around the corner!
14. Adele is first noticed on Myspace
During and after her vocational training, Adele becomes a stable online/home singer through her Myspace account, where she uploads her raw pieces to get feedback from a small fan base.

After the small encouragements on Myspace, Adele posts some of her songs on PlatformsMagazines.com.
The reviews there earn her some countrywide gigs with classmates including Amos Lee and Jack Penate.
Rise to Fame
16. Finally, discovery in 2007
Myspace is responsible for bringing this young songstress to the limelight.
When Adele’s friend uploads her song on Myspace, it changes the singer’s life.
A few months after graduation, Adele starts receiving major offline contracts for recording her songs.
17. Adele is first represented by XL Recording
Soon she is answering and meeting representatives of various labels who are ready to make her a star.
Nick Hugget from XL signs her to the label and introduces her to the company September Management.
Adele is surprised at getting a record deal with such a great company.
At first she thinks it is merely a joke so she makes her friend accompany her to the interview!
18. Her early work as a singer
Within just two years of being signed with XL, Adele makes it to the headlines.
She provides the vocals for Jack Penate’s debut album and supports the 2007 MENCAP Charity Concert, both of which give her and the label a good idea of the thunderous response from Adele’s growing fan base.
Soon, in October 2007, her first song “Hometown Glory” is released to the mainstream media.
19. Her international breakthrough
It isn’t long before Adele’s international presence soars.
Her debut album is released in the United States, followed by her tour of the country, both of which take her rankings even higher.

20. Musical guest on the famous “Saturday Night Live”
Her presence on “Saturday Night Live” with U.S. political candidate Sarah Palin is the biggest break in Adele’s career.

21. An Evening with Adele
In 2008 after her debut album is launched in the United States, Adele begins a countrywide tour of the UK called “An Evening with Adele.”
After the success of this tour, her next visit is scheduled for the U.S. where her records are selling like hotcakes.
These tours are a delicacy for a young artist who has barely just set foot in the industry!
22. Canceling a major tour still has a sour taste for Adele
In June 2008, the singer cancels her U.S. tour so she can spend time with her boyfriend.
For Adele the decision to do so is still a big regret in life.
According to her, “I was drinking far too much and that was kind of the basis of my relationship with this boy.
I couldn’t bear to be without him, so I was like, ‘Well, OK, I’ll just cancel my stuff then’… I can’t believe I did that… It seems so ungrateful.”
23. Performing in the U.S. for nothing less than the top charts
Adele’s performance of “Cold Shoulder” and “Chasing Pavements” in the United States earns the album a top place on iTunes and the fifth spot on Amazon.com.
Her musical appeal and success in the country are summed up by Billboard Magazine’s review: “Adele truly has potential to become among the most respected and inspiring international artists of her generation.”
And by 2009, the album sells 2.2 million copies worldwide.
24. Do you know who Adele’s inspiration for “19” is?
At times inspiration strikes in weird ways; ways we all wish we could avoid! For Adele, the phrase “building an empire over a broken heart” fits just right because her unsuccessful relationship provides the feelings and energy that she channelizes towards her hit album.
While speaking at the Grammy Awards, she says, “This record is inspired by something that is really normal and everyone’s been through it—just a rubbish relationship.”
Awards and Recognition
25. Her subsequent projects win her global awards
Even though “Hometown Glory” is a single that Adele writes at age 16, it resonates well with her fans.
She becomes the first singer to receive the BRIT Awards Critics’ Choice.
Not only this, but in the annual BBC music polls, Adele is named the best breakthrough hit of the year 2008.
26. For Adele, success is just beginning…
Being an artist to receive such awards and recognition even before she comes up with debut albums is no less than a golden feather in her cap.

A number of hits from her debut album, together with her second single “Chasing Pavements,” stay at the top of the UK charts for weeks, making her an instant sensation.

28. Adele is recognized by the Times Encyclopedia

For this feat, the Times Encyclopedia of Modern Music gives immense recognition to her album and names it an “essential, blue-eyed soul recording.”
29. Winning the acclaimed Urban Music Awards
Apart from the awards Adele wins for Best Performance and Best Artist, her recognition at the Urban Music Awards makes her choice of music a distinct characteristic of her personality.
Winning the award for Best Jazz Act, Adele cements her foothold in the category of soul music.

In 2009, Adele’s career as a young and upcoming artist is fueled by the Best Female Pop Performance Award and the Best New Artist Award at the 51st Grammy Awards.

Second Album
31. Launch of Adele’s second album “21”
In 2011, Adele launches her much-awaited second album by the name of “21,” which again ties to her age.
It becomes a No.1 hit in 26 countries worldwide, making Adele a living legend.
Even though the theme of this album also revolves around love, the music is described as “country and roots.”
32. The Nashville inspiration for “21”
According to the singer, the songs of this album are inspired by the Nashville music that the bus driver played during Adele’s American tour! Count on Adele to find inspirations in all things! In an interview with Spin Magazine, she is reported to say, “It was really exciting for me because I never grew up around [that music].”
Record-Breaking Success
33. Adele and the Beatles’ records

This hasn’t been achieved by anyone since 1964!
34. “21” breaks high records for its singer
By December 2011, “21” sells 3.4 million copies in the UK, making Adele the first artist in the history of the UK music industry to sell over 3 million copies in one year.
Simultaneously, this album takes the No. 1 position in the Billboard 200, and three songs from it take top ranks in the Billboard 100, making their singer the only one to have achieved this target.
More recently, in the United States the album’s sales surpass 10 million.
35. Adele – the Grammy Queen
Apart from winning smaller awards for her earlier singles, in 2012 at the Grammy Awards after her live performance, Adele is a nominee in six categories, including Best Video, Best Album, Best Song of the Year and Artist of the Year.
And guess what? She wins them all!
36. Adele breaks records set by music legends
Who knew a small-town girl could take the world by surprise? Not only does Adele write and sing well as a child, she makes history as an adult singer.
After Béyoncé, she is the only artist to take home six Grammy Awards in one night and that too for all the major categories.
No doubt, she is one inspiring woman.
37. A Diamond Certification is all that is lacking for Adele!
In 2012, Adele earns an RIAA Diamond Certification for her music, making her the only artist in the last decade to have won this award.
According to the Chairman and CEO of RIAA, Cary Sherman, “We are thrilled to honor Adele with an RIAA Diamond award marking her enormous ‘21’ sales success.
Selling more than 10 million albums in the United States, in less than two years, is an achievement unparalleled by any other artist in the past decade, let alone just a few in all of history.
Adele’s unique talent is a gift to music fans, and her success is certainly a cause for a celebration of Diamond magnitude.”
38. A truly international artist
Winning in the home country seems a big deal for this artist but winning at the American Music Awards is pure success.
Because of the skyrocketing sales of her second album “21,” Adele is a nominee and winner of three awards at this ceremony, each as prestigious as the other.
She wins the Favorite Pop Female Artist Award, Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist Award and the Favorite Rock Album Award.
39. What “Rolling in the Deep” does for its singer…
After ending up in the Top 5 of the UK charts, “Rolling in the Deep” also wins its singer other prestigious awards.
Adele is the only singer in the long history of the research company Nielsen SoundScan to have the Year’s Best Album (“21”), the Year’s Best Song (“Rolling in the Deep”) and the Year’s Best Song Video for the same in 2011.
Not only this, after its Grammy nomination, the album has a record number of increasing sales; more than Nielsen SoundScan has recorded ever since 1991! The same rankings are awarded to Adele by Billboard as well.
40. In Adele’s case, two’s a charm!
In December 2012, “21” is again rated as the Best Album of the Year with the singer being named Best Artist of the Year by Billboard, making her the first artist to enjoy these ranks for two consecutive years.
Inspired by the manner in which Adele’s music and lyrics affect people all over the world, the Associated Press names her the Entertainer of the Year 2012.
41. Hitting international charts in less than 2 years
Adele’s album “21” is not only appreciated in the UK and U.S., it also takes the music industry by storm in Australia where it becomes the second-longest No. 1 running album ever and the first No. 1 running album in the 21st century.
42. “21” makes up for more than half the growth in album sales
According to Nielsen SoundScan, Adele’s sophomore album “21” is such a hit that the company’s headline states “…Album Sales Up For The First Time Since 2004.”
Every percentage point of growth in this regard is owing to the sales of this album because before it the industry was recording diminishing returns.
43. “21” also breaks records for digital sales
Adele’s “21” is also a popular hit in the digital media.
According to a survey, one out of every three people who buy a record of “21” also purchase a digital album.
This makes the artist the only one to secure over 1 million digital sales of her second album.
Minor Setback
44. Going through vocal cord surgery
In 2011, news spreads that Adele has sustained considerable damage to her vocal cords that requires immediate surgery.

46. Adele has a very close-knit fan community
Right before she is diagnosed with laryngitis, Adele writes on her website to communicate the news of cancellation of shows and her tour.
Rumor has it, she prefers to impart such major news herself.
She writes, “I’ve been told to cancel tonight’s show in Minneapolis because my voice has gone.

I hope to see you all then!”
47. Adele has a sense of humor!

57. Never married – following in her mother’s footsteps?
Adele is an emotional person by nature and relationships mean a lot to her.
Even though she has been in a few serious relationships before, she remains unmarried even as she has her first son, just as her mother did when Adele was born.
58. An avid tea drinker?
Adele is not conscious of her looks, unlike most showbiz personnel.

59. Even stars like Adele have stage fright
Adele has confessed multiple times that soothing her nerves before a stage performance really gets out of hand! Panic attacks and vomiting, she says, are a routine every time she is to face a big audience.

60. Adele’s family is as un-musical as it can get!
Reminiscing over the past, Adele says that her voice and the knack for song writing were all nurtured because of her early childhood interest in music.

Truly, riding on her passion alone has Adele making her way to the top.
61. Adele is a family person
Instead of appearing on magazine covers and tabloids, Adele prefers to spend time with her family, especially her mother, who has been her biggest support and well-wisher.

Trains are always late, most state schools are shit and I’ve got to give you, like, four million quid – are you having a laugh? When I got my tax bill in from [the album] ‘19,’ I was ready to go and buy a gun and randomly open fire.”
